Artificial sweeteners
Even though there is very little public information on this, we have a theory that artificial sweeteners like Aspartame & Sucralose lower the body's immunity to viruses VERY QUICKLY. We've also had reports that artificial sweeteners can trigger a herpes breakout (both genital and oral) within 10 minutes of consumption. At first we thought it was only aspartame causing these outbreaks, but apparently artificial sweeteners such as Splenda (Sucralose) can have similar effects.

I was lucky in that aspartame has always given me headaches. If I want a bubbly drink I drink plain sparkling water with a bit of 100% fruit juice in it.
Also, it is far better to limit your sweets to fresh fruits or organic or raw sugars and use them in extreme moderation. I get my sugar fixes via raw sugar in organic coffee most of the time. NEVER ingest anything with high fructose corn syrup if you can avoid it at all for it will make you fatter more quickly than pizza and make you more prone to diabetes and other ailments. It doesn't get absorbed properly like natural sugars or something.
And hi, Robyn. Once upon a time I spent a month at a WW camp in the NC mountains. This was before whole grains and low-fat foods were readily available. I came out looking and feeling great. Unfortunately my older brother tried to pimp me out to his dope dealer who was six years older than me and I was so freaked out that I began eating again and hiding in my room instead of exercising. Ah well. I was only fourteen.
I have nothing to add to the artificial sweetner info. However, by attending RFA (Recovery from Food Addiction) and eating on the food program in Kaye Sheppard's book subtitled The Body Knows, I have lost 28 pounds in 3 1/2 months. And I have not had any indigestion or whatever it is when you'e sleeping and your food comes up. I am praying for the ability to continue this program -- no sugar, no flour, no wheat. (Also, no cheese, no caffeine, no carmel coloring and no alcohol.) I admit it is a challenge but there are so many good reasons to follow it.

My understanding from reading about herpes is that the main things to avoid in the diet are foods high in Arginine and low in Lysine. There is a long list of foods that are higher in Lysine than they are in Arginine on the site www.herpes.com. Here is a page with a list of foods that are helpful:

Exercise is highly recommended for anyone suffering from immune system problems. As for artificial sweeteners, I have not read that in herpes self-care sites. By the way, this post may be more easily responded to by herpes sufferers if you would allow anonymous posting.
I have never had a herpes outbreak immediately after using an artificial sweetener, but I am not big on aspartame. I usually use sucralose or saccarine. There have been occasions when I have used aspartame, but no herpes effect.
